A Shocking Record of My First Year in Business

As of today, August 24, 2017, it has been 363 days since I quit my job to start my business.

So as I round out my first full year in business, I wrote this blog post to summarize all of the notable things that occurred over the past 52 weeks.

Now, you might be thinking, “How could you possibly remember everything that happened?”

Answer: I can’t… by memory.

But I CAN by record.

The very first full week that I was in business, I began a weekly ritual to record the “ONE BIG THING” I accomplished that week.

Admittedly, it was a total fluke that I figured out I needed to do this so soon in my entrepreneurial journey. I simply got to Friday, the last day of my first week, and realized I had actually done it. I had left my job and I hadn’t died yet.

So I clicked over to my Google calendar and created an “Event” that spanned the length of that first week with the title of the ONE BIG THING that happened – “DIDN’T DIE.”

Then, at the end of my second week in business, I realized I had done another noteable thing – I had developed an initial social media strategy for my new business.

I clicked over to Google calendar and entered “SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY DONE,” making the event span the length of the calendar week.

And that’s when it clicked. I realized that this little tiny action I was taking to record the ONE BIG THING I had done that week helped me feel accomplished. It helped me feel confident. It showed me that I was doing the work I need to do. I was taking meaningful steps forward. Albeit, they were small steps in the beginning. Some weeks they still are. But they’re still propelling my business forward.

And if I don’t take the time to recognize those accomplishments each week, I think it’d be so easy for me to just plow through an entire quarter, without giving myself credit for the meaningful work I’m doing.

And let’s face it – as entrepreneurs, if we can’t give ourselves credit, ain’t nobody else going to.

And there you have it, folks.

The first 52 weeks of my business.

Did you notice how some weeks the ONE BIG THING was super small and easy to overlook?

Again, that’s exactly why the practice of recording your ONE BIG THING every week is so powerful. It encourages you to find that ONE BIG THING when you would otherwise just go about your business and forget to take a second and give yourself credit.

Because there’s ALWAYS a ONE BIG THING.

You simply have to acknowledge it.

And on that note, here’s to the next 52 weeks, sure to be a crazy, fascinating, well-documented ride.
